Poker Variations

Here, you will find four other variations of play – straight, stud, draw and community.

With a straight variation, this involves the oldest of Poker plays, which is played with a standard deck of cards. The aim is to make card structures and combinations, with raising and re-raising allowed at various points of play. Straight play is the single oldest variation of Poker and has a number of close links to a gamed called Primero. Primero was a popular game for men during the time of the American Revolutionary War.

In Stud Poker, the player receives a mixture of face-up and face-down cards, followed by rounds of betting. Stud Poker has its own internal variations: it was historically popular as a three-card game played by both aristocrats and soldiers. The game then developed into a five-card hand, and more recently, moved to a seven-card stud. Players still need to make the best five-card combination they can put together, but they have seven cards with which to do it. This increases the probability of constructing a good hand.

In Draw Poker, players are dealt complete hands before the first round of betting. This hand is then developed by ‘drawing’ or replacing cards. The most common variation is called five-card draw. Each player is dealt five cards, one at a time, all face down. The remaining deck is put to the side. Players then pick up the cards and specify how many of them they want replaced. These cards are discarded and replaced by the same quantity of cards that the player let go, so the player still has five cards in his hand.

Community Poker is more commonly known as flop poker and refers to the communal hand that applies to the card combinations of all players actively in the round. These communal cards can also be termed “shared” or “window” cards, indicating the fact that they are visible to everyone. A common variation of community Poker is Texas hold-em.

Texas Hold-em is the most popular variation of communal Poker and is played in the best australian online casino. Two cards are dealt face down to each player, and then two players are designated as the big and small blinds. The big blind is equivalent to the minimum bet. Then the hand begins with a pre-flop round of betting, beginning with the player left of the big blind and moving clockwise. A round of betting then continues until every player has folded, put in all of their chips, or matched the amount put in by all other active players. After the flop, a fourth community card is revealed, followed by a fifth community card. Then there is just one more round of betting, followed by the grand showdown.

In the showdown phase, each player must try to put together his best hand from the now total seven cards. A player can choose to make use of one or both his hole cards to form his final five card hand. The player with the strongest hand then wins the round and the money in the pot.
